How Little Hunter is Redefining Safe Raw Feeding
Over the past two decades, our research and understanding of dog nutritional needs has significantly advanced, highlighting both the benefits of whole, natural, raw diets while also highlighting the downsides of heavily processed diets (esp kibble) on long term canine health, including chronic health issues ranging from pancreatitis, hearth health and obesity.

While the growing adoption of raw diets have praised, particularly by holistic veterinarians, for their transformative health benefits, there have also been concerns about safety driven by both valid concerns and misinformation among pet owners and many veterinarians. We hear all those are concerns, take them seriously (many are definietly valid) and will show how we have addresed them or they actually don't apply to the food we make.

Fears around raw diets often center on the risk of bacterial contamination, with pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli at the forefront of pet parents' concerns. These risks, while associated withfrozen and homemade raw, don't apply to Little Hunter's freeze-dried raw meals. Our commitment to safety begins long before the food ever gets to our facilities with the use of only high quality, USDA rated, human-grade meats. Unlike many traditional dog food brands who use lower quality, "4D meat" see our post here for more on that), Little Hunter food starts the same as what you'd bring home from your local butcher or market, removing much of the risk that comes with low quality, older, and potentially diseased meat (that's unfortunately all too common in the pet food industry).

The Little Hunter Difference: Freeze-Dried for Safety
Upon arrival, our meat is chopped/ blended together with added organic fruits & vegetables into bite sized nuggets (you can still see the vegetables if you look closely) and then promptly moved in to our state-of-the-art freeze-drying equipment where moisture is removed over an extended period of time at 40 degrees below 0, not only killing off bacteria but also creating a low-moisture environment inhospitable to future bacteria (allowing for our food to be stored at room temperature without risk (or preservatives) - say hello to your freezer!).

The next step we take after is flash pasteurization—a gentle heating technique that exposes the food to a brief flash of heat at 160 degrees - just enough of a termperature increase to kill off/ eradicate any potential harmful pathogens that may have survived the freezing exposure without degrading the nutritional content or cooking the food.

This means that the concerns traditionally associated with raw diets - like having thawing or decaying raw meat in your kitchen exposing both your dog and family to pathogens (as well as low quality dog food) are a non-issue with our pantry-ready, freeze-dried meals.
